East High School PTSA Committees

The East PTSA has six Committees with chairs that are elected by the Board.  We invite you to explore their focuses below, and join us as a volunteer as we work together to support our Angel community (and have some fun along the way)!

Membership Committee

Chairperson: Rebecca Gibbs & Nina Kuhl

Rebecca is a New York City native, but grew up in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago. Rebecca relocated to Colorado in 2010 because she wanted a better life for her son and family. Rebecca originally came to Denver on a travel job assignment working as a Sterile Processing Tech (sterilize and clean the instruments for the operating room). Rebecca has worked as an SPT for 13 years, eight of those years were spent in Denver. Rebecca, since has become an entrepreneur by driving Uber, Lyft and by building her World Venture business. Rebecca also attended the Community College of Aurora with plans to graduate with her Nursing Degree. For Rebecca 2018 has been a year of growth and many opportunities. Rebecca has partnered up with Mocha Enterprises, Healthy Denver Festivals and Healthy Denver Inc. She has also started a career in finances working for Financial Freedom Inc.

Rebecca enjoys the beautiful nature and mountains of the Rockies. On Rebecca off days she loves spending time with her son. Rebecca also love to go to the movies, read or listen to motivational books, go hiking and try new and spontaneous things with her friends and family. When Rebecca was asked to be part Healthy Denver Inc and Mocha Enterprises she was honored to be part of such a great opportunity and business venture. A business that she can be a part of for years to come.

Nina has a degree from Carnegie Mellon and previously worked for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati and Belgium and for several technology companies in Denver. Since 2010, she has been a Realtor with HomeSmart Cherry Creek. Nina is involved with the community and previously chaired the Park Hill Home Tour, was the Secretary for the McAuliffe at Smiley Foundation and lead a Girl Scout Troop for 5 years.

The Membership Committee oversees membership recruitment and tracking, volunteer recruitment for PTSA and school needs, community support programs  (like East’s phenomenal Prom Committee, Clean-Up Day, Angel Awards and much more), and teacher and staff recognition and support. The Membership Committee Outreach a strand of the membership committee dedicated to family support (under the guidelines of a structured protocol).  

Wellness Committee

Chairperson: Liz Rutledge

Committee Members: Liz Rutledge, Lisa Roberts, Liz Curran, Dana Eckhoff, Christy Belz, Lori Pace, Carla Witt, Dana Eckoff,  and Linda Austin. Seeking additional members to coordinate Angel Talks.

The Wellness Committee shall plan, execute and fundraise for Angel Talks (a TEDx-like format presentation) on topics relevant to the East Student and Parent Community, partner with Be The Influence (BTI), a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce teen alcohol, marijuana, nicotine and other drug use, and collaborate with East administration to implement ANCHOR (Awareness Nurture, Cope and Help Onto Resiliency), a school-based on-site mental health & wellness facility.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee shall support the Finance Chair with his/her board directives including but not limited to review of the monthly statement, filing of the IRS 9-90 Easy, and oversight of the annual audit (performed independently of the Finance Chair).

Communications Committee

Chairpersons: Hilary Afshary & Allison Johnson

Hilary Afshary has been living in Denver for 11 years, and has one daughter who is a Freshman at East.  She recently served as a Marketing and Communications Consultant for three years to William “Bill” Roberts E-8 in Stapleton.  Prior to the move to Denver, Hilary enjoyed a 10 year career with Intel Corporation managing community relations, government relations and marketing and communications.  In her spare time, she has served on many non-profit boards and was the PTSA Chair at Blessed Sacrament School in Denver.  Hilary loves to travel, spend time with family and friends and is looking forward to meeting you!

Allison McGee Johnson has more than 25 years experience in communications and public relations for public, private, government and nonprofit entities.  She focuses her efforts on community relations, public affairs, media relations and crisis communications. Prior to starting her own consulting business, she was director of communications for the Gill Foundation in Denver, and before that was director of public relations for Destination Hotels & Resorts.

Allison moved to Denver in 1995 and lives in Park Hill with her husband and two children, one senior and one freshman, both at East.  She has contributed her time in several ways to the Denver community, in particular as chair of the public relations committee for Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, as board president of the Montessori Academy of Colorado, as a fundraiser for Stanley British Primary School, and as chair and then treasurer of the board of directors for Urban Peak.  She is currently a member of two nonprofit boards: the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center and the Colorado Community Land Trust.

The Communications Committee shall develop and execute an annual communications plan including goals and messaging for delivery through identified communications channels; plan and execute 1-2 panel discussions with Student Council that highlight topics focused on the student perspective; recruit volunteers for and coordinate Family Navigator program; assist with the Reach Out program and assist EHS administration with Fall shadowing and recruitment activities.

Nominating Committee

The nominating committee is comprised of three (3) members who shall be elected by the board of directors of this local PTSA at least two (2) months prior to the election of officers.  The nominating committee shall  elect a chair and nominate one (1) eligible person for each office to be filled and report its nominees at the regular membership meeting at least thirty (30) days prior to the election (additional nominations may be made from the floor at the election meeting and only those individuals who are current members of a local PTA/PTSA and who have signified their consent to serve if elected shall be nominated for, or elected to, such office).

Teacher Appreciation Committee

Chairperson: Emily Bovard and Blythe Kingsbury

Emily is a Colorado Native and long time Stapleton resident where she is raising her three children; an East Senior and Freshman as well as a Bill Roberts 6th grader.  She has been involved in PTA/PTSA activities during her children’s entire education journey serving in various capacities including Direct Giving Party Chair, Teacher Appreciation and more!  She is currently a DPS teacher and was previously a commercial real estate broker.

Blythe is a Denver native and a long time Park Hill resident where she is raising her three children; an East Freshman, a DPS 6th grader and a DPS 3rd grader. While Blythe is currently the library manger at McAuliffe International, in her past life she was the Director of Fundraising for a non-profit. She is passionate about public education and has spent much of the last 12 years actively supporting DPS schools as a PHE auction chair, volunteer, and room parent.
